I’ve noticed a Quicken Intuit service for business websites on television. The premise of their ad is simple: they make business web sites simple and cheap. Sure; like everyone else before has. Anyhow, in one scene, a “mom and pop” couple “successfully” upload their site — dramatically and succinctly portrayed, of course. Immediately afterwards, we see the same couple “watching” a Google search window, and, voilà! their site magically bumps to the top. Of course it’s that easy.
So, either Quicken Intuit has paid Google handsomely for this “feature,” (making Google look very unethical) or, more likely, given the perceived importance of SEO by initiates, that’s a bit too much fantasy to stomach.

I’ve seen that ad and I think it is misleading in that all these Mom & Pop type businesses are led to believe they can “do It Themselves”. Sure they can, but their results will be mediocre at best.
It takes a lot more than an out of the box web format to make a great website-

I’m sure you agree. Your business like ours relies on folks understanding that it they want good results, they “Hire the professionals” so that they can concentrate on getting their daily business done right.

Well, I get there’s a niche market for small business, say, someone doing a speculative venture, and a web site isn’t a required or critical aspect to their business. 4 pages, maybe, a couple photographs and a well-written copy. (BTW, creating well-written copy is VERY difficult, I know you know that but so many take that for granted.) That would be perfect for this setup. But, whoa, it is misleading (put mildly) to suggest that your $10 site will go up against the “big dogs” AND smoke ‘em on Google.
